Hub and Blades

These are the heart of any wind turbine system, and from a safety point of view, the most critical.

Our blade set has been computer designed to extract the maximum amount of power from the wind. This is a a unique, efficient and very tough rotor system that will survive pretty much anything you can throw at it.

Unlike other low cost blade systems, the Turbotricity blades are injection moulded using glass reinforced polyamide, a polymer specifically designed for small turbine blades. The hub of the blade is sandwiched between two hubs in such a manner that they simply cannot become detached.

We have tested this system to destruction (or tried to – see here). The blade hub system seems unburstable. We have left this turbine running off-load in storm force winds, short circuited the generator at full speed, and let the tower drop, after which the turbine still worked as normal.

The blade set is designed to operate at speeds of up to 500 rpm. In practice, we usually harvest 3kw at a rotor speed of approximately 360rpm.
